Everyday Omens

Lizard falling on you

A lizard falling on you is most often a house gecko that lost its grip while hunting near a light, and it is as startled as you are. In Hindu lore recorded in 1903, a lizard running up a person was a messenger of blessing.

What it may mean

A gecko dropping from the ceiling onto your shoulder weighs a few grams and sets off a scream heard three rooms away, but the fall itself has a plain cause. House geckos hunt near lamps, where moths gather, and many falls happen mid-lunge: the lizard stretches for a moth, a foot lands on a dusty or damp patch of paint, and the grip that held it upside down for hours lets go. It twists in midair with its tail, lands on its feet and is gone before you finish shouting. People lose their footing the same way, reaching for one more thing (an extra project, a late errand, a favor stacked on a full week) until the hold on everything else gives out. Hindu lore recorded in 1903 read the landing more kindly: a lizard that lit on a passer-by and ran nimbly up his body was a messenger of blessing.

Depending on how you saw it

A child who saw it happen

Children who watch a gecko land on a parent often find it the funniest thing they have seen all week, and they retell it for years. Being laughed at softens the scare. Who in your house laughs at your frights, and does it help?

Falling on a visitor

In homes where geckos are a nightly sight, the family barely looks up, and it is usually the visitor who gets the lizard on the shoulder and the fright of the night. What is so ordinary in your home that it would startle a guest?

Lizards climbing before a storm

A 1903 encyclopedia notes that in hot countries a lizard climbing up a screen warned that a storm was close. People who live with geckos learn their small habits. Which creatures or routines in your home change before the weather does?

Why it happens in nature

House geckos and other small lizards cling to walls and ceilings with fine, hairlike structures under each toe, but they lose their grip on dusty, wet or very smooth patches, or when they lunge at prey or are startled. A falling gecko can twist its body and tail in midair to land feet first, and at a few grams it is seldom hurt.

What folk beliefs say

India (Hindu)

Among Hindus, a 1903 collection says, if a lizard lights on a passer-by and runs nimbly up his body, the man goes forward in high spirits, for the little creature is a messenger of blessing.
