Light bulb burning out
Old-style bulbs most often burn out at the instant you flip the switch, when a surge of current hits the cold filament. So when a bulb pops, consider what your own fresh starts cost you.
What it may mean
A bulb that gives out with a pop and a flash most often goes at the very moment you switch it on. A cold filament lets through a big rush of current for a split second, and that sudden load is harder on it than hours of steady glowing. Starting is the hardest part of its job. People are not so different. Getting going in the morning, restarting a project after a break, walking back into a room full of colleagues after weeks away: the first minutes can drain more than the hours that follow. So when a bulb dies at the flick of a switch, it is worth asking where you could soften your own starts: a slower warm-up, a lighter first task, an easier first hour. Silesian miners once read a failing lamp as a grave omen; most of us meet a burned-out bulb with a sigh and a spare.
Depending on how you saw it
A bulb that flashes as it dies
That bright blink at the end is the filament breaking and arcing for an instant. It looks dramatic and is over at once. Which recent ending of yours looked far more dramatic than it turned out to be?
An LED bulb that fails early
LED bulbs are rated for many years, yet one in an enclosed ceiling fixture can fail much sooner, because heat builds up around its electronics. The setting wore it out as much as the hours did. Where are you running hot in a closed-in space and blaming yourself for the wear?
Several bulbs going in the same month
When a few bulbs burn out close together, they were often put in at the same time and reached the end of their lives together. What starts together often wears out together. Which parts of your routine began at the same moment and might need renewing as a set?
Why it happens in nature
Incandescent bulbs most often fail when switched on: the cold filament has low resistance, draws a brief surge of current many times its normal level, and a thin spot breaks. Halogen bulbs fail in a similar way. LED bulbs last far longer but can fail early from heat, especially in enclosed fixtures, or from weak electronics in the base.
What folk beliefs say
Silesia (Central Europe)
A Silesian miner, the 1903 collection says, would make his will if his lamp went out before its oil was spent.
