Ants in the house

Ants in the house follow scent trails that grow stronger each time they are used and fade when ignored, much like your own habits. In Indian and Macedonian belief, ants moving onto a property signaled prosperity.

What it may mean

Ant trails are made of use. A scout that finds a crumb lays a faint line of scent on the way home; every ant that follows and finds food adds to it, and within hours the trail is a highway. When the food runs out, nobody renews the scent and the path fades away. Your own habits work much the same way. The route you take to work, the phone you reach for in the morning, the friend you call when things go wrong: each grows stronger every time you choose it, and the paths you stop walking fade without any announcement. Watching ants cross the counter can be your nudge to look at which trails you have been laying down lately.

Depending on how you saw it

A single ant wandering the counter

The lone ant that seems lost is often a scout, wandering in loops until it finds something worth reporting. Most scouts find nothing. What are you exploring that is allowed to fail several times before it finds the crumb?

A trail that breaks after you wipe it

Wipe a trail with soapy water and the ants mill around in confusion, because the scent they were following is gone. A small change in the environment ends a long habit. Which habit of yours could you interrupt simply by changing what is around it?

Ants moving in after heavy rain

After a soaking storm, ants often move indoors, sometimes carrying their white pupae, because their nest has flooded. They are not invading so much as evacuating. Is there someone around you who seems pushy right now but is really looking for dry ground?

Winged ants on one warm day

On a single warm, humid day, winged ants may pour out of a crack in the wall or the lawn, and nests across the neighborhood often do it at once. The weather sets the date for all of them. Which of your plans depends on conditions that you cannot set but can watch for?

Why it happens in nature

Most ants in American kitchens are small species such as odorous house ants and pavement ants. A scout that finds food lays a scent trail on the way back to the nest, and other ants follow it and reinforce it, which is why a few ants become many within hours. Wiping the path with soapy water removes the scent and breaks the trail.
