Lovebugs landing on you
Lovebugs landing on you are most likely drawn by a light-colored shirt and the heat of a sunny afternoon. These small flies spend much of their short adult life joined to a partner, which is how they got their name.
What it may mean
An adult lovebug lives only a few days, and much of that time it is not alone. A male and a female couple up soon after they emerge and stay joined, end to end, flying and resting as one awkward unit. So when a lovebug lands on your sleeve, it is most often two of them. Watch the pair for a moment and you see the clumsiness of it: each half tugging a little its own way, then lifting off together anyway. Many human arrangements look like that from outside (a business run by two siblings, a couple raising small children, two friends sharing an apartment), and they work better than anyone watching would guess. Floridians generally see lovebugs as a windshield nuisance, but the name says something kinder about them.
Depending on how you saw it
A joined pair walking on your arm
On a flat surface a coupled pair moves clumsily, with each insect facing its own way, yet the moment they take off they fly straight enough. Which arrangement in your life works better in motion than it looks standing still?
Clouds of them over the highway in May
Along the Gulf Coast, lovebugs swarm for a few weeks in April and May and again in August and September, drawn to roads by heat, engine vibration and exhaust fumes in the sun. People plan car washes around those weeks. Which seasonal nuisance do you now plan around without complaint?
Spattered on the windshield
Left on a car for several days, lovebug remains turn acidic enough to mark the paint, so Florida drivers learn to rinse them off quickly. A small mess grows harder to remove the longer it sits. Which small mess in your week would take five minutes today and an afternoon next month?
Covering a freshly painted wall
Lovebugs are drawn to light-colored and newly painted surfaces, so a freshly painted porch or a white car can end up dotted with them. The new paint attracted the crowd. When you last started something fresh, what did it draw that you had not planned for?
Why it happens in nature
Lovebugs are small flies of the Gulf Coast states that emerge in huge numbers for a few weeks in spring and again in late summer. Males live only two or three days, and pairs stay coupled for much of that time. Adults are drawn to warmth, to light-colored and freshly painted surfaces, and to sunlit exhaust fumes over highways.
What folk beliefs say
Florida (United States)
A widely told Florida story holds that University of Florida scientists released lovebugs into the state. The university's own entomology fact sheet calls this a myth: the flies spread along the Gulf Coast on their own and were first collected in the Florida panhandle in 1949.
