Everyday Omens

4444 angel number

4444 repeats four, the number of seasons and compass points, which the Pythagoreans called the greatest miracle. Its theme is the season of life you are in, and whether you are living it or fighting it.

What it may mean

Four divides the world into turns: north, south, east and west; spring, summer, autumn and winter. 4444 multiplies that sense of a cycle. Does your year have room for all its seasons, the busy ones and the fallow ones, or are you trying to live in permanent summer? Many of us fight the slow months instead of using them. A winter of rest, study or repair is part of the cycle, not a failure of it. Old lore, as Westcott collected it, found fours everywhere, and modern readers still disagree about what they signify. Which season are you in now?

Depending on how you saw it

During a slow season at work

Slow months make some people anxious. Seeing 4444 then can turn the slowness into a season with a purpose. What could a slow month be good for?

At the turn of a season

Seeing 4444 on the first cold morning or the first warm one can make the cycle tangible. What would you let go of as the season ends?

When you have lost your direction

Four is also the number of compass points. A run of fours when you are unsure of your way can be enough to make you name a direction, any direction, and test it. Which way would you lean if you had to choose today?

Why it happens in nature

Writing in 2005 about the frequency illusion, the linguist Arnold Zwicky paired it with a recency illusion: the belief that things you have only noticed recently are in fact recent. If 4444 seems to have started appearing this month, it has likely been around all along; what changed is that you began to see it.

What folk beliefs say

Pythagorean tradition

Westcott cites Nicomachus: the Pythagoreans called four the greatest miracle and a god after another manner.

Occult lore (Westcott)

The same book lists fours in nature and scripture: four seasons of the year, four quarters of the horizon and the four rivers of Eden.
