Everyday Omens

Dog digging a hole in the yard

A dog digging a hole in the yard is most often making a cool place to lie down, burying something for later or chasing a mole or insect it can hear underground. Some breeds were bred for exactly this work.

What it may mean

Watch a dog dig on a hot afternoon and you will often see it stop, turn around twice and lie down in the hole. The top layer of soil bakes in the sun, but a few inches down the earth stays cool and damp, and the dog has simply dug itself a bed. It did not wait for anyone to hand it a fan. Of all the reasons dogs dig, this one is the plainest and maybe the most useful to think about. When the day grows too hot, in whatever sense, people often wait for relief to come from outside: a vacation, a change at work, someone else noticing. A dog scraping out its own cool spot suggests a humbler step: make yourself a small, comfortable place right where you are, even if it ruins the lawn a little.

Depending on how you saw it

Burying a bone or a toy

Dogs often bury chews and toys and then forget them, or dig them up weeks later with great pride. The habit comes from wild ancestors that cached extra food. What are you saving for later that you may never come back for?

Digging along the fence

A dog that digs at the base of a fence may be bored, following a smell from the other side or trying to get out. What lies on the other side of your fence that keeps you scratching at it?

A terrier at a molehill

Terriers and dachshunds were bred to dig out animals from their burrows, and many still dig wherever they hear something moving underground. Which instinct of yours was shaped by the work your family did?

Why it happens in nature

Dogs dig for several ordinary reasons: to make a cool resting spot in hot weather, to bury food or toys, to reach moles, mice or insects they can hear and smell underground, to escape or explore, and out of boredom. Some breeds, such as terriers and dachshunds, were bred to dig after burrowing animals.

To reflect on

When a day gets too hot for you, what small, cool place could you make for yourself right where you are?
