Itchy lips
Itchy lips meant a kiss was coming in old English belief, a saying printed as early as 1620. The itch also makes you notice the small things your mouth does all day while your mind is elsewhere.
This page only describes folk beliefs. If the sensation keeps coming back or worries you, please see a doctor.
What it may mean
An itch on the lips gets attention fast, because the lips are already busy all day. People press them when thinking, bite them when nervous, touch them while reading, run a finger along them during a call, often without noticing. An itch interrupts that private routine and makes it visible. The old English answer was cheerful: Melton's catalog of popular superstitions, printed in 1620, said that if your lips itch you shall kiss somebody, a line that has been used to tease people across tables ever since. You do not need to wait for the kiss to learn something from the itch. Noticing what your mouth does when your mind is busy can show how you handle tension, focus or boredom, and whether those habits soothe you or wear you down. Most old sayings about itchy lips tease rather than warn.
Depending on how you saw it
Upper lip itching
The upper lip is the one people often tap or rest a finger against while they think or read. An itch there can catch you halfway through a thought. What do you reach for, with your hands or your mind, when you are concentrating?
Lower lip itching
Biting the lower lip is a very common nervous habit, often done in lines, exams and hard conversations. The itch can be a sign of a lip that has been worked on all day. What made you nervous today, and did anyone notice?
Itchy lips in cold, dry weather
Wind, heating and cold air dry the lips quickly, and lip balm ends up in every pocket as a result. The tube becomes a small ritual. What little comfort do you carry everywhere just in case?
An itch just before seeing someone
If your lips itch on the way to meet someone you love, the old saying fits neatly. A greeting can be a hug or a peck on the cheek. Who would you greet more warmly if you were not worried about how it looked?
Why it happens in nature
The lips have very thin skin and almost no oil glands, so wind, cold, sun and dry indoor air dry them quickly, and licking them makes it worse as the saliva evaporates. Because they are packed with nerve endings, even a small tingle there is hard to ignore.
What folk beliefs say
England
Melton's Astrologaster, an early English catalog of superstitions quoted by Brand, says that if your lips itch, you shall kiss somebody.
