Everyday Omens

Lip twitching

Lip twitching draws attention to the part of the face people hold most carefully: the mouth. Folklore says almost nothing about it, which leaves room to look at how much expression you manage each day.

This page only describes folk beliefs. If the sensation keeps coming back or worries you, please see a doctor.

What it may mean

The mouth is the part of the face people work hardest to keep in line. You hold a polite smile through a long meeting, clamp your mouth shut in an argument, keep a straight face at the wrong joke. So when the lip starts flickering on its own, it can feel as if your face has slipped out of your control, even though nobody else may notice. That small rebellion leads to a question about how much expression you manage each day for others' sake. Some of that management is kindness and good manners. Some of it may be a mask worn so long it pinches. Old beliefs about a twitching lip are scarce, and most folklore deals with lips that itch instead. Whatever you make of the flicker, it can be a cue to let your face rest for a while, alone, with nobody to perform for.

Depending on how you saw it

Upper lip twitching

The upper lip does most of the work in a smile, lifting and holding while you wait for the camera or nod through chitchat. A flicker there can catch you mid-grin. Which part of your face works hardest on an ordinary day?

Lower lip twitching

A trembling lower lip is the classic sign of a child about to cry, so a flicker there can feel more emotional than it is. It may be nothing more than a passing twitch. Is there a feeling you have been keeping at arm's length that could use a little room?

A twitch in the middle of a conversation

Feeling your lip jump while you speak can make you suddenly self-conscious about your whole face. The listener keeps listening. Does it change how you speak when you think your face might give you away?

Why it happens in nature

Most people feel a small flicker in the lip from time to time, often for only seconds. The lips are rich in nerve endings and among the most sensitive areas of skin, so even a tiny movement there is easy to notice.
