Everyday Omens

Finding a dead butterfly

Finding a dead butterfly is often finding something that still looks whole. Butterfly wings keep their color and shape long after death, so finding one may bring to mind finished things that remain beautiful.

What it may mean

Most adult butterflies live only a few weeks. When one dies, though, its wings hardly change. They are made of tough chitin covered in tiny overlapping scales, and the colors stay bright for years if kept dry, which is why old museum collections still glow. A dead butterfly on a windowsill can look almost exactly like a living one at rest. That stillness can unsettle, and in some traditions a dead butterfly is an omen of sorrow. It can also console: a short life that left something lovely behind. The find may lead you to think about the finished things in your life that are still beautiful: a friendship that ended well, a job you left with pride, a stage of family life now past. Greek myth pictured the soul itself as a butterfly, and how you feel about the find is your own.

Depending on how you saw it

Lying at the bottom of a window

Butterflies that drift in through a door often end up beating at a closed pane and die there within days. Releasing a live one right away saves it. What small, timely help have you planned to give and kept putting off?

Caught in a spider web

A butterfly hanging in a web is a meal for the spider, part of the garden's ordinary balance. It looks cruel, yet it keeps another life going. Which loss around you is also someone else's sustenance?

On the road or the grille of a car

Many butterflies die crossing roads, especially during migrations. Drivers rarely notice. Which small losses happen along your daily routes that you have stopped seeing?

Keeping the wings

Some people press a dead butterfly between glass or keep it in a box, and the colors last. A thing kept with care becomes a memory you can hold. What finished chapter of yours would you like to frame rather than throw away?

Why it happens in nature

Many adult butterflies live two to four weeks, though some, like overwintering monarchs, live for months. Their wings are chitin membranes covered with colored scales, which do not decay quickly when dry, so a dead butterfly keeps its look. Indoors, butterflies trapped against windows soon die from heat, dryness and lack of food.

What folk beliefs say

Ancient Greece (myth)

Greek mythology made Psyche the personification of the soul, pictured as a winged maiden or at other times as a butterfly.

England

An English lady, a 1903 collection reports, stopped a game of lawn tennis because a butterfly settled on the court, which she held to be an unlucky omen and a sign of death.
